How to become a cab driver in the Tricity

Six steps, in the order that actually saves you money. Most people do steps three and four the wrong way round and pay for it.

Written for Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur · free to follow · no agent needed

The six steps

  1. Hold a valid driving licence

It must be current and in your name. If yours has lapsed, renewing it is the first thing to do — everything below depends on it.

  2. Decide whether the car is yours or someone else's

This is the fork in the road. Owning it means no rent but all the maintenance; driving someone else's means rent or a revenue share. Read the own-car route and the attachment route before committing money to either.

  3. Sort the commercial paperwork before spending on the car

Permit, commercial insurance and a PSV badge where it applies. Doing this after you have bought or rented a vehicle is how people end up with a car they cannot legally use for fares. See the PSV badge guide.

  4. Get your documents photo-ready

Licence, RC, insurance, Aadhaar or PAN. The document checklist lists what gets applications rejected.

  5. Register on a platform — free

Download the GediGoo Driver app on Google Play, sign up with your number, upload the four documents. Verification is free and so is resubmitting.

  6. Go online and learn your patch

Your first week is really about learning where demand sits at which hour in your area. That knowledge is worth more than any incentive scheme.

What it costs to start

Nobody publishes this honestly, so here is the shape of it. Platform registration should cost you nothing — on GediGoo it does. The real money goes to the vehicle and the paperwork, and those costs are the same whichever app you eventually drive for.

If anyone asks you for money to 'activate' an account, walk away

GediGoo charges drivers nothing to join, nothing to be verified and nothing monthly. There is no agent who can speed up your approval for a fee, because there is no queue to jump. Registration fee scams are common in driver recruitment across India — the rule that protects you is simple: legitimate platforms take their share out of fares you have already earned, never out of your pocket up front.

Cab or bike — which should you start with?

If you already own one of the two, that answers it. If you are choosing, the trade-off is capital against margin: a two-wheeler costs a fraction as much to buy, insure and run, but each fare is smaller. We put the actual numbers side by side in bike taxi vs cab driver earnings.

Driver FAQs

How do I become a cab driver in Chandigarh?

Hold a valid driving licence, arrange a vehicle you are entitled to use commercially, complete the commercial paperwork the transport authority requires, then register free on a platform such as GediGoo by uploading your licence, RC, insurance and Aadhaar or PAN.

Do I need experience to become a cab driver?

No prior app-cab experience is needed. A valid licence and the right vehicle paperwork are the real requirements. See driver jobs for freshers.

How much does it cost to start driving a cab?

Registering with GediGoo costs nothing — no fee, no deposit, no subscription. The costs that do exist are the vehicle and the statutory paperwork (permit, commercial insurance, PSV badge where it applies), and those are charged by the authority or insurer, not by the platform.

Do I need a PSV badge in Chandigarh?

It depends on your state and the vehicle class. Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana each have their own rules, and our PSV badge guide covers all three.

Can I become a cab driver without owning a car?

Yes — you can drive a vehicle attached to a fleet or owner. The car attachment guide explains how those arrangements are usually structured and what to check before signing one.

How long before I can take my first ride?

Once your documents are verified you can go online immediately. The wait is document review, which is done by hand and free.
